The "MOUSE" and the "RECEIVER"

The Remote Mouse
The remote mouse or just "MOUSE", as we refer to it in this user's guide, is the thing pictured in the above photo. Remember, there are just two basic parts to this product. They are the MOUSE and the RECEIVER.

  1. Triangular Function Key - Blinks red or green for different functions.  It is shaped like a triangle.

  2. Navigation Disk - The Navigation Disk is basically a digital trackball, which allows you to move the cursor around the screen.

  3. Slide Advance - This allows you to advance your PowerPoint® slides forward or reverse.  Slide it down to advance.  Slide it up to reverse. (the slide advance only works with PowerPoint® 2000 or later versions)

  4. Laser Lens - This is the source of the laser beam.  As with all laser pointers, please use caution with this device.

  5. Left & Right Mouse Buttons - These work exactly like the left and right mouse buttons on a standard computer mouse.

  6. Laser Button - This is an on/off button for the laser beam.

  7. Wireless Receiver - This is the part that plugs into the computer.  It is about the size of a pack of gum.

  8. USB Connector - The USB connector plugs into any available USB port.  Most modern day computers have USB ports.

  9. Reset Button - Use this button only when the Laser Mouse is not working or if you are changing channels.  The Wireless Receiver must be plugged into running computer for the reset button to work.  See Changing Channels section below for more details.

The Carrying Case
It is a good idea to make it a habit to always pack your Laser Mouse Remote and the little Laser Mouse Receiver into the carrying case right after you're finished with your presentation.  The little receiver looks like a USB "Thumb Drive".  Therefore, they are a target for would be thieves that think they found a new "Thumb Drive" for their computer.

What is Laser Mode?

What is Laser Mode?
"Laser Mode" is a safety feature that disables the Laser Beam until the Laser Mouse is placed in "Laser Mode"

How do I place it in Laser Mode?

Installation

  1. Insert Battery - Place the battery into the Laser Mouse with the positive side up.  Hold the "Laser Button" and the "Triangular Button" down at the same time for about 5 seconds.  This will place the Laser Mouse into "Laser Mode".  Now press the "Laser Button" to test that the laser is working.
  2. Insert Wireless Receiver - Insert the Wireless Receiver Unit into any available USB port on your computer.
  3. Windows 2000/XP - For Windows 2000 and Windows XP, the operating system will automatically detect and install the Laser Mouse.  The Laser Mouse will be ready to use in about 30 seconds.
  4. Windows 98/ME - For Windows 98 and Windows ME, the operating system will automatically detect the Wireless Receiver, but you will have to hit the "next" button a few times and you might have to insert the Windows 98/ME CD into your computer.  After this procedure the Laser Mouse will be ready to use.

Don't get a Speeding Ticket

How to Adjust Pointer Speed: Before you get frustrated with the "Mouse" performance of the Laser Mouse, first check the speed of your mouse. It might be set too slow or too fast. The properties of the Laser Mouse are controlled by the regular "Mouse" properties found in the Windows "Control Panel". To get to Control Panel, click on the "Start Menu" and select "Settings" and then select "Control Panel". There you will see an Icon of a computer mouse. Double click on the Mouse Icon and a window will pop up displaying the mouse properties. There you can adjust the speed of the cursor. Speed it up or slow it down according to what works best for you.

Tip: To adjust the speed of your Laser Mouse, go to Start Menu, then select Settings, then select Control Panel, then select Mouse. When you get to the Mouse Properties, select the Pointer Options tab. Inside Pointer Options you will see a box to adjust the pointer speed. Slide the bar to the right to make the pointer go faster.

New Multimedia Functions

The newly redesigned Laser Mouse now functions as a remote for your iTunes ® or most other music/media computer programs.

Multimedia Functions: You probably noticed the new markings on the Laser Mouse. What do these markings mean? Every symbol on the Laser Mouse is for one of the new multimedia functions. For example the "Power On/Off" starts the default media application. The Up/Down arrow above and below the Navigation disk is to move from track to track on your media program. The Play/Pause symbol on the Mouse Button Bar is to Play and Pause your music tracks. The Multimedia functions work with most media applications like Windows Media Player and the popular iTunes software.

Important Note: There are two basic modes of operation: MOUSE MODE (default) and MEDIA MODE (flashing green light). When you press the Triangular Function key once, it will light up green (and continue to flash green) and will place the Laser Mouse in "Media Mode". While in Media Mode the Navigation Disk will not move your mouse on the screen. To exit "Media Mode", simply press the Function Key once more and it will go back into "Mouse Mode".

How to tell if the Laser Mouse is in “Media Mode”
Stare at the triangular button for about 10 seconds. If it flashes green about every 3 seconds then the Laser Mouse is in “Media Mode”.

MEDIA MODE ON
Press the triangular button once and it will light up and stay lit for about 5 seconds. Then it will continue to flash about every 3 seconds to indicate the Laser Mouse is in “Media Mode”.

MEDIA MODE OFF
Press the triangular button once and it will light as you press it but it will stop being lit as soon as you release the button.

press this button once for "multimedia" mode, press it again to return to "mouse" mode

  1. Press the triangular button once and it will turn green indicating that the Laser Mouse is now in multimedia mode.  It will continue to blink green.  Click here to see picture.

  2. You will see new special multimedia markings on the buttons of the new Laser Mouse.

    1. Left Mouse Button = Play/Pause

    2. Right Mouse Button = Stop

    3. Navigation Disk = Song/Track Selection

    4. Scroll Button = Volume Control

    5. Push-in on Scroll Button = Mute

  3. It's really simple.  Just open up your media program.  Click the Triangular Button.  And then use the Laser Mouse to control various functions on your music program.

Changing Channels (Don't do it unless you have to)

The only time you need to change the channel is when you are using multiple Laser Mice that are close enough to interfere with each other.

If the Laser Mouse is not working or if there is interference with another Laser Mouse, you will want to change the "Channel".  To change the Digital ID please follow the instructions below.

  1. Change Channel - Press the "Triangular Function Key" and press in on the "Slide Advance" simultaneously for about 5 seconds.  (make sure you press in on the "Slide Advance".  Don't roll the "Slide Advance up or down, but press in on it.) When the "Triangular Function Key" flashes green, you have changed the Channel.

  2. Place the Receiver in "Learning Mode" - First, plug the receiver into the USB port.  Use a narrow object like a paper clip to push the "Learning Mode" button. Press this button quickly.  If you hold the button for too long (say over 5 seconds), the receiver will not go into "Learning Mode".

  3. Send New Channel to the Receiver - Press the "Navigation Disk" on the Laser Mouse.  This will send the new channel to the Receiver Unit.

If the receiver is still not working, repeat steps 1-3.

Note: If you remove the battery, the channel will be reset to the factory default.

Trouble Shooting

Help, my Laser Mouse is not working!!!

Step 1: Make sure it is in Mouse Mode

Press the Triangle shaped button once.  Now press the Navigation Disk and see if the mouse starts working.  If not, go on to STEP 2

Step 2: Test the Battery

  1. Open up the battery compartment and double check that the "Positive" (+) is facing up.

  2. Place the Laser Mouse into Laser Mode (see Laser Mode here) and test the Laser.  If Laser Works then go on to STEP 3

Step 3: Test the Receiver

  1. DO YOU HEAR A TONE? Remove the little Laser Mouse Receiver from the USB port on your computer.  When you remove it you should hear a beep or a tone from your computer.  Now plug the receiver back into the computer.  You should hear a beep or tone when you plug it back in.  If you do not hear any beeps or tones, double check that your volume on your computer is not muted or that your speaker system is turned on.  If you still do not hear any beeps or tones, then got to next section B. If you do hear beeps or tones go to section C.

  2. USB EXTENSION CABLE.  Now try plugging a USB extension cable into your computer's USB port.  Next, plug the little receiver into the other end of the USB cable.  Notice if you hear a beep or tone.  Now pick up the Laser Mouse remote and test to see if it works now.  1. If you did not hear a tone and your Laser Mouse still does not work, please send us an email here.  2. If you did hear a beep or tone, but your Laser Mouse still does not work, go to section C

  3. RESET THE RECEIVER.  The problem may be that the Laser Mouse is not talking to the receiver.  With the little receiver plugged into the computer, take a paper clip and stick it into the little hole that's located on the receiver.  There is a little bubble button inside the hole and you should feel it going down as you press the paper clip into the hole.  Ok, now you receiver is reset.  Pick up your Laser Mouse remote and test it out to see if it works now.  If your Laser Mouse still does not work, please got to section D.

  4. TEST IT ON ANOTHER COMPUTER.  If you have another computer available, try testing the Laser Mouse on another computer. Try to find one with a similar operating system (for example, Windows XP).  If your Laser Mouse still does not work, please send us an email here.

My Laser Mouse works, but it doesn't respond very well

  1. TRY A DIFFERENT USB PORT: Try moving the little receiver to a different USB port.  Simply unplug the little receiver and plug it into a different USB port on your computer.

  2. USB EXTENSION CABLE.  A USB extension cable can improve the reception of the Little Receiver. Now try plugging a USB extension cable into your computer's USB port.  Next, plug the little receiver into the other end of the USB cable.  Now pickup up the Laser Mouse and see if it performs better.  If your Laser Mouse still has sluggish performance, please send us an email here.

Known Issue with some Laptops

Problem:
Though it is rare, some laptops do not have enough clearance for the "Wireless Receiver" to be fully inserted into their USB port.

Solution:
If you do not already have one, purchase a "USB Extension Cable".  Plug the USB extension cable into the laptop's USB port.  Then plug the "Wireless Receiver" into the USB extension cable.

Miscellaneous
We hope you are enjoying your new Penta Laser Mouse. However, there are a few items that you should keep in mind while using this great product.

  1. Keep batteries out of the reach of children.
  2. Remove the batteries if the device will not be used for longer than a month.
  3. Never, ever point the Laser Beam at the eye of yourself or another person or animal. The Laser Beam is a powerful form of light that could cause injury to your eye.
